Brain Image Analysis Group (NIAG)

The Brain Image Analysis Group (NIAG) is an interdisciplinary team comprising specialists and experts from various fields, including neuroscience, brain imaging, medicine, medical physics, biomedical engineering, radiology, statistics, neuroanatomy, and more. The group focuses on employing brain imaging approaches for research and clinical applications.

NIAG was established in 2009 under the leadership of Dr. Mohammad Ali Aghabian at the Cellular and Molecular Research Center, Tehran University of Medical Sciences. It is based in the Medical Imaging Center of Imam Khomeini Hospital. Over the years, numerous researchers and specialists have conducted studies in various fields as part of this group.

With over a decade of experience, NIAG has played a crucial role in metabolic and physiological brain mapping for patients with brain tissue lesions. These conditions often lead to functional deficits in daily activities or structural abnormalities in brain neural tracts. In cases where conventional imaging methods fail to provide definitive diagnoses, NIAG designs and implements specialized imaging protocols to assess structural and functional disturbances.

Additionally, functional imaging techniques such as fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and DTI (Diffusion Tensor Imaging) have become indispensable for pre-surgical brain mapping. These methods are now considered essential prerequisites for neurosurgical interventions. Results from DTI, fMRI, and MRS (Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy) are increasingly recognized as critical tools prior to brain surgeries and radiotherapy. These imaging techniques help prevent unintended damage and unnecessary interventions in vital brain regions.

The clinical activities of NIAG significantly assist neurologists and neurosurgeons in diagnosing and offering treatment strategies for conditions such as brain tumors and epilepsy.
